Police withdraw defamation charge against Dele Farotimi

The Nigeria Police Force has filed a notice to discontinue the defamation suit brought by Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, against Lagos-based lawyer and author, Dele Farotimi.

Channels Television obtained the notice of discontinuance, dated January 29, filed under Section 108 (1) (2)(a) of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015.

The notice seeks to withdraw the charges against Mr. Farotimi at the Federal High Court in Ado-Ekiti.

Signed by police prosecutor Samson Osubu, the document reveals that the decision to drop the case followed the intervention of well-meaning Nigerians and the request of the nominal complainant, Are Afe Babalola, to discontinue the matter.

As of this report, both parties were present at the Federal High Court, Ado-Ekiti, where the prosecution has served the notice to the defense counsel.

However, the judge has yet to sit and formally strike out the case.
